Will Cardinal Tetras eat the shrimp in your tank?
Expect them to eat shrimplets. The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a small tetra, and small tetras are often peaceful with adult shrimp, but many will pick off baby shrimp. Tank-bred by Shrimp Aquatics, ours aren’t collected from the wild, and that doesn’t change how a hungry fish treats a shrimplet.
If raising shrimplets matters to you, keep Cardinal Tetras in a separate tank. If your shrimp colony is only there as a cleanup crew and you accept losing the young, a shared tank is your call.
Does your water suit Cardinal Tetras and your shrimp at the same time?
Check that before you plan a mixed tank. Two animals only belong together when their temperature, water chemistry, space and feeding all overlap, and a fish that does well in one aquarium can struggle in another.
Sulawesi shrimp are the hardest case. They need warm, alkaline water at 79-86°F (26-30°C) and pH 7.5-8.5, so if that’s your tank, choose from the short list of fish that can live with Sulawesi shrimp, each judged on that water. We wouldn’t add Cardinal Tetras to a Sulawesi tank without that match.
Get the tank ready before your Cardinal Tetras ship
- The tank is fully cycled, with ammonia and nitrite at 0 and an established filter.
- Temperature is stable and doesn’t swing between day and night.
- You’ve compared the fish’s water needs with the shrimp or other livestock already in the tank.
- Any fish medication you keep on hand has been checked for copper and other ingredients that can harm shrimp and snails.
Arrival day for your Cardinal Tetras
Follow the instructions packed with your order, since packing and transit time can change the right approach. Don’t pour the shipping water into your aquarium. Keep the lights low and skip feeding on the first day, then offer a small amount once the fish are swimming normally.
Adding more than one kind of fish? Check each of the aquarium fish you plan to order against your shrimp the same way before checkout.
