Is your tank ready for rabbit snails?
Only if it's already a warm, alkaline Sulawesi tank with a visible film of algae and biofilm on the rock and glass. Sulawesi rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) are moderate to keep. The water is the demanding part, and it's the same water our Sulawesi shrimp live in:
- Temperature 79-86°F (26-30°C)
- pH 7.5-8.5
- GH 4-8 dGH and KH 3-6 dKH
- TDS 150-250 ppm
- Nitrate kept under 10 ppm
That makes a rabbit snail a poor first step into Sulawesi keeping, and a tank that has only just finished cycling isn't ready for one. They graze the film growing on hard surfaces, and a snail this size eats into that layer. Every snail you add counts against it, so plan your rabbit snail tank size and hardscape before you order several.
Which rabbit snail should you pick?
Pick the look you like, because all four lines here need the same water. We sell every one as Tylomelania sp. and don't attach a species name to any of them. Words such as "Mini" and "Poso" are trade names. The Mini Tylo Poso rabbit snail isn't a confirmed size class or a confirmed Lake Poso animal, so don't choose it for a small tank on the strength of its name.
Expect a worn or scarred shell tip on an adult. That's normal in this genus. Fresh erosion at the growing edge of the shell is different, and it's a reason to test your pH and minerals.
Can rabbit snails live with shrimp, fish or plants?
With Sulawesi shrimp, yes. They share the same water and the same grazing surface, so the real limit is whether the film can feed both. With Neocaridina, no: the temperature ranges don't overlap at any point. Bee and Crystal Caridina need different water altogether. Never add an assassin snail to this tank, and never dose copper or a copper-based medication.
Don't buy them as algae eaters. Sulawesi Keepers reports that filamentous green algae aren't a natural food for these snails. No published record shows rabbit snails eating living plants, and none shows them leaving plants alone. To keep rabbit snails from eating your plants, choose hardy epiphytes tied to rock and treat soft-leaved species as at risk.
Ordering rabbit snails from Vietnam
Everything in our catalog is bred or propagated in our own tanks rather than collected from the wild. We don't promise breeding, sex or the number of young from any order.
Shipping is a flat USD 120 per order to every country. You'll pay it once if every line you want goes into a single order, and our shipping policy for live orders sets out the rest. Shrimp Aquatics pays the duties and taxes the courier bills against the shipment, on every route. You are not asked to settle a customs charge before the box is released to you. Confirming your own import rules is part of ordering. We cannot tell you that live freshwater invertebrates are legal to import where you live. Once the courier collects the box, transit is normally 2-3 days.
When the box arrives, film one continuous unboxing from the sealed box, with the shipping label readable, until every bag is open and counted. The live arrival guarantee needs that video and a report within 2 hours of the carrier's delivery time.
