The Mini Tylo Poso Rabbit Snail (Tylomelania sp.) is a slow grazer for a Sulawesi tank that’s already mature, warm and alkaline. The snail itself is a moderate keep. The water is the demanding part. If your tank isn’t holding Sulawesi numbers yet, don’t start that tank with this snail.

At Shrimp Aquatics, this line is tank-bred by us and isn’t collected from the wild. Rabbit snails belong to the genus Tylomelania, which is native to Sulawesi, Indonesia. The trade name points to Lake Poso, but the species behind this line hasn’t been identified. That’s why we list it as Tylomelania sp. and don’t put a species name on it.
We don’t list an adult size for this line yet. Read “mini” as a trade name, not as a tank size. Whether your tank suits this snail depends on the water and on how mature the tank is, and the next two sections cover both.

Is your Sulawesi tank mature enough for this rabbit snail?
A snail this size adds to the grazing load on your rock and glass. Extra food can’t make up for a tank that hasn’t grown its film yet. Check every line before you add one.
- The tank is fully cycled, with ammonia at 0, nitrite at 0 and an established biological filter. How long the tank has been running doesn’t prove this on its own.
- You can see a film of algae and biofilm on the rock and glass.
- Temperature and chemistry sit inside the table above and stay stable between tests.
- The substrate and hardscape are inert, with no active soil pulling pH down.
- No copper or copper-based medication goes into this tank, now or later.
- No assassin snails, because they prey on other snails.
What can share a tank with a Mini Tylo Poso rabbit snail?
Sulawesi shrimp are the natural match. They need the same water and graze the same film, so plan your stocking around how much film your tank grows.
Bee, Crystal and Taiwan Bee shrimp won’t work, because they need soft, acidic water this snail can’t live in. Neocaridina only partly overlap with this water, so we wouldn’t add them as a default companion.
Plants are harder to call. No published record shows Tylomelania eating living plants, and none shows it leaving them alone. Our advice is to treat soft-leaved plants as at risk and choose hardy epiphytes tied to rock.
Settling a new Mini Tylo Poso rabbit snail without overfeeding it
Follow the instructions that come with your order, and don’t pour the shipping water into your aquarium. A safe default is to keep the lights low and skip feeding on the first day.
Your snail may stay shut inside its shell for a while after it arrives. Leave it alone, keep the water stable and resist the urge to pick it up and check on it.
After that, the film on your rock and glass is its main food. There’s no verified list of extra foods this snail needs. If you offer prepared food, give a small amount and remove anything uneaten. Food won’t make up for a tank that has no grazing film.
