Mating, eggs or live birth, raising young and breeding problems.
Wondering what you can do to get your Sulawesi shrimp breeding? Less than you’d think: you can’t make them breed, but you can give a female-heavy group of one line a mature, warm, alkaline tank and then hold everything still…
Hoping your rabbit snails will give you babies? Rabbit snails can breed in a home aquarium, and there’s little to do beyond keeping a small group well, in steady, warm, hard water with plenty to graze. What you won’t get…
Usually you don’t need to separate a pregnant (berried) vampire crab while she’s carrying eggs. She goes into hiding on her own, and the step that decides how many young you raise comes later: separating the crablets, or the adults,…
Yes, give a berried vampire crab (Geosesarma) soil she can dig into. She spends most of her brooding weeks out of sight, often dug into the ground or tucked in a burrow, and damp soil lets her dig a hiding…
No. A smaller tank won’t push a vampire crab female into a bigger clutch, so it won’t give you more babies. What changes how many young you raise is cover and separation, because adults eat the young they catch. How…
Yes, inbreeding can affect vampire crabs, though it creeps in over generations and doesn’t wreck a colony overnight. No study has measured it in vampire crabs themselves, but in a small freshwater shrimp a single generation of brother-sister mating already…
No, a male and female vampire crab kept together can’t be reliably stopped from breeding. If you keep an adult pair together, plan for crablets, because these crabs need nothing more than a freshwater paludarium to raise young, and there’s…
Yes. If you want the babies to survive in any number, move every adult vampire crab into a second, fully set-up paludarium and leave the crablets where they hatched. Adult vampire crabs eat the crablets they catch, so splitting the…
You’ve just spotted a tiny, fully shelled snail on the rock beside your adult rabbit snails. Rabbit snails (Tylomelania) have one baby at a time, and in a home tank keepers see about one every four weeks from each female.…
There’s a small white pearl on the sand beside your rabbit snail, and you’d like to know how long it’ll take to hatch. There’s no egg stage to wait out: rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) are live-bearers, and keepers commonly report…
How long will a female rabbit snail keep producing young? As far as keepers can tell, for as long as she stays healthy, and no study has measured that span in any rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.). A settled adult female…
Can a baby rabbit snail grow up and breed with its own mother? In all likelihood, yes, and there isn’t much you can do about it. Rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) have separate sexes, and a male looks just like a…
