Aquarium snails, algae control, and tank mates.
Your tetras are settled in, and now you’d like a rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.) grazing the rocks below them. Most tetras aren’t a good match: the snail needs warm, hard, alkaline water at 79-86°F (26-30°C) and pH 7.5-8.5, and the…
Can your guppies and a rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.) share one tank? We wouldn’t put them together, because the two only share 79-82°F (26-28°C) and never meet on hardness. The snail needs 79-86°F (26-30°C) and 4-8 dGH, while FishBase lists…
Your rabbit snail has spent days shut in its shell or half-buried in the sand, and you haven’t seen it graze once. Most rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) that hide are resting or settling in: keepers commonly report a new snail…
Can a rabbit snail go in with your Caridina shrimp? Only if they’re Sulawesi lake Caridina such as Cardinal shrimp, which are kept in the same warm, alkaline water as the snail, and never if they’re Crystal Red, Bee or…
Your rabbit snail keeps vanishing under the sand, and some days you can’t find it at all. That’s usually nothing wrong: Sulawesi Keepers describes some rabbit snail species as living in fine sand or mud and not climbing on stones…
Can your Neocaridina shrimp share a tank with a Sulawesi rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.)? Yes, as long as the snail sets the temperature and the shrimp stay a small group. Neocaridina are usually kept up to 78°F (26°C) and a…
You’ve just spotted a tiny, fully shelled snail on the rock beside your adult rabbit snails. Rabbit snails (Tylomelania) have one baby at a time, and in a home tank keepers see about one every four weeks from each female.…
What does a newborn rabbit snail actually need from you? Keep baby rabbit snails in the same mature, warm, alkaline tank as the adults, with every filter intake covered and nothing in the water that eats snails. They’re born already…
Your rabbit snail spends the afternoon tucked under a rock and only starts roaming once the lights go off. That doesn’t make it nocturnal: most care sheets and keepers describe Sulawesi rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) as moving by day and…
Is that chalky, worn tip on your rabbit snail something to fix? Usually not: on an adult rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.) a worn tip is old wear that wild snails carry too, while fresh pitting or whitening near the opening…
A rabbit snail and a Malaysian trumpet snail have both made your shortlist, and they’re about as different to live with as two snails can be. Choose the rabbit snail if you want a slow, showy grazer and already run…
Rabbit snail or ramshorn, which one belongs in your tank? Your water decides it: a rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.) needs a mature, warm, alkaline Sulawesi tank, while a ramshorn fits the ordinary community tank most keepers already run. Ramshorns also…
