Aquarium snails, algae control, and tank mates.
You’d like a rabbit snail in your shrimp tank, but somewhere you read that they eat shrimp. They don’t: rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) are slow grazers that scrape a film of algae and microbes off rock, wood and glass, and…
Caught your rabbit snail with its snout buried in a tankmate’s shell? It most likely didn’t kill it: Sulawesi rabbit snails (Tylomelania spp.) aren’t known to hunt, kill or eat healthy snails. They’re grazers that work the film of algae…
A tiny cone-shaped snail has turned up on the glass of your tank, and you need to know whether it’s a baby rabbit snail or a pest. Get it moving and look at its head: a baby rabbit snail (Tylomelania…
Can a rabbit snail have cucumber? Yes, a rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.) will usually eat a peeled, softened slice sunk where it can reach it, parking on top and rasping away. Just don’t count it as a meal, because cucumber…
Your rabbit snail tank has a haze on the front glass and a scatter of droppings across the sand. Most rabbit snail tanks need cleaning once a week, and a small water change plus a light pass over the sand…
That slippery brown film on your rock and glass, is it really food for your rabbit snail? Yes, rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) graze the biofilm that grows over rock, wood and glass, and that grazing is the feeding mode the…
There’s a small white pearl on the sand beside your rabbit snail, and you’d like to know how long it’ll take to hatch. There’s no egg stage to wait out: rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) are live-bearers, and keepers commonly report…
Is that zucchini in your fridge safe to give your rabbit snail? Yes: a rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.) will usually graze a slice of blanched zucchini, and plain zucchini carries nothing that can harm it. Treat it as an occasional…
Your tank is on the small side, so the plan is to fill it with wood and rock and give a rabbit snail more to explore. More hardscape won’t make up for a small tank: it adds surface to graze,…
How long will a female rabbit snail keep producing young? As far as keepers can tell, for as long as she stays healthy, and no study has measured that span in any rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.). A settled adult female…
Your rabbit snail tank sits at 74°F, and breeding was never the plan. It’s still too cold. 74°F is below 79-86°F (26-30°C), the range we keep rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) in. A tank held there is cool for the animal…
Will an assassin snail really go after a rabbit snail several times its size? We wouldn’t risk it, because size isn’t the rabbit snail’s protection: an assassin snail never has to get through the shell. An adult assassin snail reaches…
