Water parameters, molting, and species guides.
Yes. In most tanks vampire crabs and dwarf shrimp live together fine: the crabs chase shrimp but catch few, and Neocaridina keep breeding in the water section. Losses pile up when a handful of shrimp go into a small, thinly…
Yes, adult ghost shrimp usually work with vampire crabs in a 20-gallon paludarium. A grown ghost shrimp is several times longer than a vampire crab’s shell is wide. Both animals are happy at the temperature you’d keep the crabs at,…
Can a rabbit snail go in with your Caridina shrimp? Only if they’re Sulawesi lake Caridina such as Cardinal shrimp, which are kept in the same warm, alkaline water as the snail, and never if they’re Crystal Red, Bee or…
Can your Neocaridina shrimp share a tank with a Sulawesi rabbit snail (Tylomelania sp.)? Yes, as long as the snail sets the temperature and the shrimp stay a small group. Neocaridina are usually kept up to 78°F (26°C) and a…
You’d like a rabbit snail in your shrimp tank, but somewhere you read that they eat shrimp. They don’t: rabbit snails (Tylomelania sp.) are slow grazers that scrape a film of algae and microbes off rock, wood and glass, and…
What is Lake Matano’s water actually like? Its surface is warm, startlingly clear and short of dissolved minerals, at 77-82°F (25-28°C) and pH 8.6 in one study and pH 7.4 in another. Neither set of numbers is what you should…
Your Sulawesi shrimp creep over the rock all day, and the moment you lean in, they’re gone. That’s normal: a settled Sulawesi shrimp spends almost all its time working a thin living film off rock with its front legs, and…
How close should your tank get to Lake Towuti’s water? Not very: across seven surface stations sampled between June and October 2009, the lake averaged 85.3°F (29.6°C) at pH 7.46-8.40, with a conductivity of only 139-156 µS[[1]] That’s warmer, more…
Your Sulawesi shrimp spend the whole day picking at bare rock, even with food in the tank. That’s what their lakes built them for. A handful of very old Indonesian lakes hold almost nothing a shrimp can eat, so these…
Is there a fish that’s safe to keep with your Sulawesi shrimp? No fish belongs in a Sulawesi shrimp tank: some eat your adults, the peaceful ones eat the shrimplets, and the rest quietly take the biofilm and grazing time…
You’ve settled on Sulawesi shrimp, and now you want the most colorful one you can get. Nobody has ranked Sulawesi shrimp by color, so pick the pattern you like best, then check it will still show in your tank. The…
Which snail can actually live in a Sulawesi shrimp tank? Start with the Sulawesi rabbit snails, Tylomelania, and add a nerite or two for the glass, because rabbit snails come from the same lakes, hold the same warm alkaline water…
