Sulawesi Yellow Ghost

Caridina dennerli

$49.99

Tank-bred Sulawesi Yellow Ghost, sold as single shrimp at juvenile to sub-adult size. This is an advanced line: it needs a mature tank held at 79-86°F (26-30°C) and pH 7.5-8.5, with established biofilm on inert rock and sand for grazing. Color varies between individuals and is not graded or promised. Check your water before ordering.

Yellow Ghost is one of the Sulawesi lines we breed, and it is an advanced shrimp rather than a first colony. It needs water that stays warm and alkaline, and a tank that has been running long enough to grow its own biofilm. If that is not your aquarium yet, start with the water section below and order once the tank is ready.

What is confirmed about the Yellow Ghost we breed

These shrimp are tank-bred by Shrimp Aquatics and are not collected from the wild. They come out of our own Sulawesi systems in Ho Chi Minh City, the same setup that holds our White Sock, Blue Ghost and Oiran lines.

Yellow Ghost is a hobby line name and not a verified scientific name. We have not confirmed the species behind our stock, so this page does not print one. Leaving that field empty is the honest option until we can support a name.

  • Sold as single shrimp at juvenile to sub-adult size.
  • Color varies between individuals, and we do not grade or promise a color result.
  • We do not promise sex, sex ratio or breeding results for shipped stock.

Does your water already sit in the warm, alkaline range Yellow Ghost need?

This is the question that decides the order. Yellow Ghost belong in the Sulawesi contract of 79-86°F (26-30°C) at pH 7.5-8.5, with GH, KH and TDS held in the Sulawesi range shown with this listing. Most tap water sits below that pH and well below that temperature, so reaching those numbers, and then holding them steady week after week, is the real work of this tank.

At Shrimp Aquatics, most of our Sulawesi systems currently run at TDS 150 ppm, GH 6-7 dGH and pH 7.5. Your tank does not have to match those values exactly, but the closer it sits, the less the shrimp have to adjust to on arrival.

If your numbers fall outside the range, fix the water first and order afterwards. You can also email contact@shrimpaquatics.com with your pH, GH, KH, TDS, temperature, tank size and cycle status, and we will tell you honestly whether this line fits the tank you have.

Yellow Ghost need mature grazing surfaces, not a new tank

In a Sulawesi tank most of the food is already in place: biofilm, aufwuchs and algae growing across inert rock, sand and glass. That layer takes months to build, and a tank that has not grown it yet leaves the shrimp very little to graze on even when the test kit reads clean. Prepared shrimp food has a place here, but it cannot stand in for an immature system.

Order after the tank is ready, not before

Wait for ammonia and nitrite at zero, a stable temperature and chemistry, an established biological filter and visible grazing growth on the hardscape. A calendar alone does not prove a tank is cycled.

Keep the substrate and hardscape inert. An active, pH lowering shrimp soil works against everything this line needs, so it is the wrong base here even where it serves Bee and Crystal shrimp well.

Give Yellow Ghost a tank of their own, not a mixed shrimp tank

Keeper observation published by Sulawesi Keepers, which is not a controlled study, reports that Sulawesi shrimp species can interbreed in aquaria, that the chance of any given pairing is low, and that anyone keeping these shrimp with conservation in mind should avoid holding several species together. Nobody can predict a single pairing either way, so separate tanks are the reliable way to keep each line as you bought it. If you already run White Sock, Blue Ghost or Oiran, plan a tank for the Yellow Ghost instead of adding them to that colony.

Bee and Crystal Caridina sit in a soft, acidic contract that cannot be reconciled with this water, so they are not tankmates for Yellow Ghost whatever the shared genus label suggests.

When a different shrimp is the better choice than Yellow Ghost

An advanced line is only advanced because of what it asks of the tank around it. It is worth being blunt about who should skip this listing.

Yellow Ghost suit you if

  • Your tank has run for months with stable, warm and alkaline water.
  • You can hold the temperature all year, not only through summer.
  • You already keep Sulawesi shrimp or have run a specialist shrimp tank before.
  • Testing pH, GH, KH and TDS is part of your routine, not something you do when a shrimp dies.

Choose another shrimp if

  • The tank is new, or the hardscape is still bare.
  • Your water is soft and acidic and you have no practical way to change it.
  • You keep Bee or Crystal shrimp and want one tank for everything.
  • This would be your first shrimp colony.

For a first colony, Neocaridina lines are the honest alternative, because Neocaridina sit in a cooler, less alkaline range of 65-78°F (18-26°C) and forgive a great deal more while you learn. If the water suits you but this particular line does not, the rest of our Sulawesi shrimp run on the same parameters, so moving between them costs you nothing in setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I acclimate Yellow Ghost when the box arrives?

Follow the instructions packed with your order first, because packing method, transit time and the animals in the box all change the answer. Shrimp Aquatics' current shipment protocol equalizes the temperature of the sealed transport bag and then moves the shrimp across without adding any shipping water to your aquarium. If a bag arrives open, leaking or unusually cold, email contact@shrimpaquatics.com before you do anything else.

Can I keep Yellow Ghost with fish?

Only if the fish genuinely live in the same warm, alkaline water, which many common community species do not. Even fish described as shrimp safe will take shrimplets, and some will take adults, so a species tank is the safer choice when you want the colony to grow.
