Yes, a vampire crab can live in a simple enclosure if it still has damp land with hides, water the crab can fully enter, humid air and a lid with no gaps. Any tank with land and water is a paludarium, and it doesn’t have to be an elaborate one. A plain glass tank or a lidded plastic tub with a water dish can do the job.
Why can’t you skip those parts? Vampire crabs (Geosesarma) live on land and use water. Sesarmid crabs, the family they belong to, breathe air by holding water in their gill chambers and recirculating it.1 Dry air works against that, and so does a tank with no water in reach. We don’t think a waterfall or a pump adds anything the crab needs; it’s there for you.
What does a simple vampire crab enclosure still need?
A simple vampire crab enclosure still needs a tight lid, damp land with hides, water every crab can fully enter, humid air and a steady temperature. None of these needs expensive equipment.
- A lid with no gaps. Close the slots around cords, tubing and hinges just as you would on a full vampire crab tank setup. In the species that have been described, an adult’s shell is only about 10-15 mm across,23 and crablets are far smaller, so a gap you’d overlook is a way out.
- Damp land with more hides than crabs. By day, vampire crabs sit hidden in burrows they dig, in crevices, under stones, cork or leaves, or among dense plants. Give them a damp substrate that holds a burrow, and plenty of cover.
- Water every crab can fully enter and leave. A dish sunk into the land works, and the next section covers how deep it should be.
- Humid air. In a small tank, a closed lid, damp substrate, moss and a spray bottle are enough.
- About 78°F (26°C), inside 72-85°F (22-29°C). If your room holds that day and night, you don’t need a heater.
What doesn’t count as simple is a fish tank with a rock poking out of the water. Vampire crabs aren’t aquatic, and a tank that’s mostly water is the wrong home for them, however little it cost.
How deep should a vampire crab water dish be?
Make the dish deep enough to cover your largest crab completely where it sits, and give it a rough slope or a stone so a crab can walk back out. Sink it so the rim sits level with the land, and the crabs can step straight in. Sized and sunk that way, a dish can serve as the water area vampire crabs need in a vivarium.
In our paludariums, vampire crabs go into the water to molt. That’s why a saucer a crab can only stand in won’t do: the dish has to be wide and deep enough for a crab to get fully under. Molting place can differ between species, so keep a few damp hides on land as well.
Don’t make the dish deeper than it needs to be, though. In a land crab from another family, oxygen uptake fell to about a seventh of its value in air when the crab was held under water.4 Vampire crabs haven’t been tested that way, but a way out on at least one side costs you nothing.
Fill the dish with dechlorinated fresh water. The vampire crabs sold in the hobby are freshwater crabs, and most species never need salt water, even to breed.56
How often should you change the water in a vampire crab dish?
Change it whenever it looks dirty, and at least every few days, because a small dish with no filter fouls fast. Put food on the land, not in the dish, and lift leftovers before they spoil.
Timing matters more than you’d think. In our paludariums, a molting crab stays down in the water for a few hours. If a crab is sitting in the dish, leave the change for later, and don’t lift the crab out.
Keep a small vampire crab enclosure humid without a misting system
A closed lid, damp substrate, moss and a spray bottle are all a small vampire crab enclosure needs to stay humid. About once a day is enough misting for a closed tank, more while new moss settles in and less once it has. Spray when the moss starts to look dry, and you won’t need a gauge to tell you. Let the moss, not the calendar, decide how often you mist your vampire crab paludarium.
Keep the land damp, not soaked. A simple tank usually has no drainage layer, so mist the land and don’t pour water onto it. If your vampire crabs keep dying, the moss and substrate are among the first things to check, because dry air is the usual failure in these tanks.
A closed lid brings one trade-off, and that’s mold. It’s common in a new vampire crab enclosure, above all in the first weeks, and it grows on damp wood, substrate and moss where water sits and the air is still. Lift it out, let the wettest spot dry back a little, give the lid a little more air and add springtails or isopods. Light mold on new wood can clear on its own within days. Adding them doesn’t have to turn the tank into a bioactive vampire crab enclosure.
Which paludarium extras can a vampire crab setup do without?
A vampire crab setup can do without the waterfall, pump, filter, false bottom, background and special lighting, and without a heater if your room stays warm enough. Here’s when each one starts to earn its place.
| Extra | Leave it out? | When it earns its place |
|---|---|---|
| Waterfall or stream pump | Yes | When you want moving water to look at |
| Filter | Yes, if you change the dish water often | When the water section is large, or holds shrimp or fish |
| False bottom or drainage layer | Yes, if you mist the land and never flood it | When a bigger tank holds a lot of wet planting |
| Heater | Yes, if the room holds 72-85°F (22-29°C) day and night | When the room runs cooler than that |
| Lighting | Yes, for the crabs | When you grow live plants; ordinary aquarium or terrarium lights are enough |
| Live plants | Yes, though we’d keep the moss | When you want more cover and shade |
| Background or climbing wall | Yes | When you want more space to climb |
So what’s the catch? A simple setup asks more of your hands. You’ll rinse the dish often, mist most days and check the lid every time you close it. We think that’s a fair trade for a small group of crabs. Food, molting and the rest of everyday vampire crab care stay the same whichever enclosure you choose.
When does a vampire crab enclosure need more than a simple setup?
A vampire crab enclosure needs more than a simple setup once you want shrimp or fish in the water. A dish has no room for them, and their water has to stay inside their own temperature range as well as the crabs’. Neocaridina shrimp fit the crabs’ temperatures most easily, and small, peaceful fish are the only fish worth trying.
Crablets change things the other way. Adult vampire crabs eat the crablets they catch, so moving the young to a container of their own raises the most of them. That container can be as simple as the one on this page, kept just as humid.
Once your enclosure holds its humidity and temperature from one day to the next, it’s ready for our tank-bred vampire crabs. You choose male or female on each product page. Everything in our catalog is bred or propagated in our own tanks rather than collected from the wild. We don’t promise breeding or the number of young from any order.
