Water parameters, molting, and species guides.
How big will your Sulawesi shrimp get? Small: every published measurement for this group sits well under an inch, and nobody has published a measured adult maximum. Researchers measure the carapace, the shield over the head and thorax, and put…
The shop page says Sulawesi, and that’s about all it tells you about where the shrimp came from. Sulawesi shrimp come from two ancient lake systems on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the Malili system and Lake Poso, which have…
Which Sulawesi shrimp should you pick as your first? Honestly, none of them is a beginner shrimp. If you want one anyway, start with tank-bred Cardinal shrimp, the lake species with published rearing data behind it and an established place…
There’s a pale line on your Sulawesi shrimp where the carapace meets the first abdominal segment, and you can’t tell yet whether it’s trouble. A faint, narrow line at that joint is part of a normal molt, but a broad…
Should you tear down a Sulawesi tank that keeps losing shrimp one at a time when the water tests clean? Only as a last step: once you’ve corrected everything the water lets you correct, the suspects left in a Sulawesi…
Your Sulawesi shrimp started to shed and stopped partway, and now it’s lying in the open with a pale band at the join. A Sulawesi shrimp stuck partway through a molt is in an emergency you can’t reverse by hand,…
Why did your Sulawesi shrimp drop her eggs? There’s rarely one cause to guess at, and what she left behind tells you which of three events you’re dealing with: eggs held in a cast shell, loose eggs under a bare…
You’ve got a Bee shrimp tank running, and you’d like to add Sulawesi shrimp to it. They can’t share it: Sulawesi shrimp and Bee or Crystal Caridina are kept in two ranges that never meet. One of the two groups…
Which fish can actually live with Sulawesi shrimp? Almost none: the only kind that comes close is a very small, surface feeding nano fish, added last to an established tank by a keeper who accepts that shrimplets are part of…
Your Sulawesi tank is running warm and alkaline, and a rabbit snail looks like the one tankmate that would fit straight in. Rabbit snails (Tylomelania spp.) are one of the few tankmates whose water genuinely matches Sulawesi shrimp, because the…
Will cherry shrimp hold up in the heat of a Sulawesi tank, or are you setting them up to fail? Sulawesi shrimp and Neocaridina can live in the same tank, but only on Sulawesi terms, with the water set for…
Not sure where to set the heater for your Sulawesi shrimp? Anywhere inside 79-86°F (26-30°C) works, because nothing in the published record singles out one point in that band as better than the rest. So pick the number your room…
